In Memory of Bilbo, for whom this poem was originally written:

(Not forgetting Jack, another beautiful Tabby,

who was a brave and faithful friend!)

Tabby

Tiger Tabby in the grass

Waiting for a fly to pass,

In the sunniest spots you lie.

All useless movements pass you by.

A sudden move, you leap and snatch

Out of the air with single catch

A silk winged moth in lacy fight

Fallen to ground in tangled plight.

The earth is still, the hours pass.

Long cold eyes as green as glass

Close lazily as chin meets paw

And Tabby dreams of catly lore.

But shadows fall: on fur a chill,

And cat no longer can lie still.

He yawns with stretch from tail to claw.

The sun is warm today no more.

Tiger Tabby near the hearth,

Sleeping in the aftermath

Of lovely day and fish for tea.

(A cat is all a cat can be.)

A Wintry Day in Sydney

Tiger Grass, Gotu Kola, Good for Arthritis

Princess Ariel

The Morning Cats greet Her with a yawn, then breakfast is exciting before they venture into the fragrant morning, tails aloft, one paw lifted before stepping into their own sense of drama, proper to greet a shining day.

The Inside Cats, silky Tabs and velvet Grace, vie for Lap and Nap time with She, then settle down on window sills to watch the Outside Cats and Everything That Goes On and still She sits and stares at the screen in the Front Room.

Then Tabs decides to go out to visit next door's flats.

Princess Ariel the Old Lady, accepts her breakfast.

She settles into her winter blanket with a hot water bottle.

She can't clean herself easily these days and later accepts a brush and a cuddle.

Much purring and some dribbling.

The Gotu Kola beside the front fence is Tiger Grass, (Arthritis Herb) which is maybe why she's more agile since she moved back here with all of Us.

Then Princess Ariel notices that Tabs has returned to Our Place so leaves her warm blanket and hot water bottle and moves to Over See things from the chair beside the door.

Tabs has decided to plead for Inside Status again and Ariel sees this.

Ariel decided some time ago that it's Good Sport to Fluff Up and Swear and Curse and chase little tough Tabs who doesn't ever stop to consider how old and frail is that cross old Princess!!!

Says Ariel...

'If That Cat thinks it's all right to stand and mew for entry at The Front Door, why then she will Find Out!'

The Boss She, placating, goes out and picks Tabs up to bring her inside as Princess, glowering, growling, returns to old age and her warm blanket.

Good Exercise it is to Chase!

Front Yard and Back Yard

Stan
'Am visiting Front Verandah to see Grace.'

Grace

'Am hiding from Ariel'

The Occasional Together Time

Last night, She was out late, talking with Herman The German and Roscoe about many things, so she explained as she came through our gate to meet our disapproving stares. We were cross.

She opened the door, She turned on the little ceiling sun, She put the blocks of wood against the fridge door, She set to cleaning and, in our opinion there was not enough apology.

Baby found Grace already inside in the kitchen and decided that it was all her fault. Grace doesn't get jumped very often because she screams. Baby doesn't mind making Grace yell, but it gave the rest of us a fright and we all fled back outside, then the fright spread to Grace and Baby and they fled too.

She was obviously at fault but she told us we were Bad Cats in view of Grace and She wasn't going to feed us until Grace comes back.

What She didn't know was that once Grace was outside with us, we weren't cross any more as we are if she is in and we are out, especially like today when bacon was cooked and Luci and Grace got treats.

She walked up the lane calling Grace who was hiding out with us.

She came back inside, she brought Tabs and Princess inside and fed them.

She was grumbling when she opened the back door again.

Well if she leaves some of us inside during day time, of course she's going to have to clean the trays again.... She gets crosser if we don't use the trays.

(Luci got some scratches from Black Tom recently and is now too frightened to be outside with us in daytime when Black Tom visits.)

Some times, we think She likes people better than us, but She shouldn't because we can always surprise Her.

She grumbled when eventually She let us in, saying that Baby shouldn't jump Grace and make her scream because now Grace will be out for ages and it's a good night for TV and it isn't fair and everything. She put our plates on the fresh newspaper and well, it was Tin tonight and She puts a tiny bit on one plate and a tiny bit on another plate so that we all move around which She says is so Stanley doesn't gobble everything which he will if he can. Then She seemed to go around doing things before She counted us.

Yes, we may have been too hungry to notice much ourselves but Grace, frightened of her own shriek had hidden with us, come inside with us and done the little run around the plates with us.

Perhaps She needs new glasses.

Ballanchine

Bally was born of the first litter here. He was the runt, so tiny, all the kitties of the litter lay on top of him and he was so squashed, I wondered if he would survive at all!

An elegant chap who grew very fast, he earned his name as a dancer when he was leapt upon by one of his siblings and threw an amazing backwards triple saumersalt.

He's not one of the Alpha boys. He's shy.

However, he's tall and elegant with a dramatic presence.

Last night I dreamed that I accompanied Bally to a big event. It was like turning up with a tall quiet elegant boy in a tuxedo at a place like San Simeon, the castle belonging to Hearst in the old Hollywood days.

Bally and myself walked regally between the long tables, admirers on either side.

There was a little platform on which my elegant black and white cat walked, and he was comfortable in his tuxedo.

He was so gracious and handsome. Several times, since he was the star of the occasion, I bent and kissed his head, and he accepted the tribute most graciously.

Unless you are a regular visitor here, it's difficult to get to know him well. He's shy. The dream was true insofar as he knows that he's an elegant and beautiful boy, but hey, let's face it, his markings lend validity to a dream that he appears with me wearing a tuxedo.

So, me in evening gown, accompanied by a handsome male in a tuxedo, we traverse the long hall between the tables at San Simeon.

Of course eventually at the end of our walk, the alpha boys, Stanley and Sylvio leap forward for attention.

It's OK that they do so.

We have made our impact, Ballanchine and myself, proudly dressed.

I never thought he'd be brave enough to step out in a crowd, but apparently he has his own sense of certainty.

Recent Tidings

Greyling

I've been away from blogging for a long time now and there are many reasons for this.

Initially it was the horridly infected tooth. I barely struggled through the day back then. The cat routines kept me going, the feedings, the conversations, and of course, also the photographs brought some light into another wise dark time.

My wise, kind, understanding Dentist was at the time, alas, overseas.

I could have gone to the dental hospital I suppose, but the cost of being treated as badly as that over worked place treats people was too much to contemplate, as ill as I was.

My beloved Anna helped with house work and shopping.

I was too ill to call immediately after my Dentist returned. When he did return, I was too out of it from illness and pain to call at first. When I finally managed to do so, the only appointment was a month in advance. January. Apparently his growing clientele had all missed him as much as I did.

I'd used Acupuncture to deal with immediate pain, and occasionally had even resorted to anti-inflammatory pain killers which I rarely use.

I hate extractions.

It's taken awhile to recover, but since then, the felines have had more quality time and, grateful for this, are busy every evening competing in terms of their various forms of charm.

Stanley is still evidently finding extra food. During the times when I was very much house bound, I got to know more neighbours and I asked them specifically not to feed our Stanley.

I don't know enough people in the street behind Our Place to talk to them about a cat who can turn on such immense charm as Stanley can in order to get some extra tucker. It must however, be said of Stanley, that when one is feeling lonely, sad, in pain and so on, he's a wonderful armful of beautiful cat, and he's as gorgeous, as knowing and as whiskery as ever.

If he's in the mood, he'll even deliver a soft kiss to the lips. I never knew a cat to do that before.

We had news a couple of weeks ago that Samson, Arial's fluffy golden-ginger brother passed away from kidney disease.

I have to correct my estimation of the age of that litter. Along with Arial and the beautiful Squeak, their birthday was eighteen years ago this month in Bondi, children of Mummy Totty who moved elsewhere by choice when the rest of us had no choice but to move.

Arial's arthritis is now in her front legs as well as the back legs. She requires considerable gentle massage. I also apply massage points learned from the Four Directions, Five Points book on my list and have tried to take on the dietary advice offered therein.

Arial has become very fussy about the food I offer her. She eats with good appetite when she eats, but sometimes refuses everything I offer. I suppose that it's no big deal when the rest of the tribe are happy to finish those servings later in the day.

Arial continues to hold conversations with our neighbourhood human friends and, as for moustachioed Max, the cat who moved into Artist Max's old place, Cat Max turns out to be nearly old as Arial and Madame relishes turning him away with some very bad language when he attempts to visit.

She also enjoys guarding her uneaten food from the other felines. Having been bullied by another cat in a previous situation, she loves to be brave these days. On the days when she wins a feline quarrel, she purrs a lot.

Arial accepts all the food that Jos across the road brings for her.

Sometimes she tries to follow Jos back over the road to our old place. At that point I pick up the fragile old cat to take her to her nest in the bathroom until she forgets...

I focus on Greyling today who is the sweetest lovingest BEING I ever met with the exception of Arial's sister Squeak. Squeak would politely greet every guest who visited us back in that second Bondi place. Arial is more shy, but her eyes shine love for those who she loves and she's adorably affectionate.

Greyling's first name was Grey Boy, what big balls she had, and what a mistake that was!!!

We're all intrigued by new noises which have emerged from behind the fences since The Financial Crisis hit. Can one rooster crow all day long? No. Gradually, we've come to realize that there's more than one place where people have taken to keeping poultry in these large back yards. The continual yelling is, I guess at least three roosters crowing at each other.

This place feels more like a country town than ever. Not so many paddocks all around though.
None in fact, although the cleaning up around the river banks down the hill has created some wonderful native park land.

(Too far away for our cats, but that's good.)

As for my Novel, I complained to Anna that the page which the word programme supplied was too small to manage much work.

Anna then taught me to zoom.

Drat those who stopped my computer learning way back when!

Anyway, since I learned to zoom to full page, it's so much easier to write. I'm more than halfway through the novel and have found a Mentor who advises me against contacting any Publisher before the work is read by a proper editor.

That's the next step, I suppose.

I'll let you know.

Pre Christmas Blues Are Far Away!

Cicadas, Cats & Bats.

There's a new camera, new tools, much to learn.

Our place has been mostly peaceful.

We do not like it when doors slam and people quarrel.

In the heat before Christmas, there were a lot of quarrels, next door, in the street.

There were small spats among some cats.

Not too bad, there is peace and pleasure in Our Place.

Away from the twilight street She heard no quarreling at all.

Up and down the highway, people were hurrying desperate for pleasure and positions.

Why did we hear no traffic or loud voices?

We couldn't even hear ourselves think!
